Americans Helping Americans Abroad

District 09, John Elleson

Question 1: Taxation

Would you commit to working with Americans residing abroad to reform the current citizenship-based US tax system?

Yes, I would unequivocally commit to working with Americans residing abroad to reform the current citizenship-based US tax system. Americans living abroad should not have to file tax returns twice, once in their country of residence and again in the US. The current system is confusing, expensive, and onerous with complicated and even duplicate forms - I am committed to changing this.

Question 2: Services

Will you support on-line access to government agencies and adequate funding for consular functions upon which Americans abroad rely?

Yes, I would absolutely support online access to government agencies and adequate funding for consular functions upon which many Americas abroad rely. Furthermore, Americans living abroad should be able to access and participate in the same important services available to all Americans living in the United States.

Question 3: Banking

Would you support an enforceable right for all US citizens to a US bank account so they can retain their US savings and retirement accounts and make and receive payments in the United States?

This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed - that is why, yes, I will support an enforcement right for all US citizens to a US bank account so they can retain their savings and retirement accounts and make and receive payments in the United States. The Know Your Customer and Enhanced Due Diligence rules for US banks were initially intended to prevent banks from being used for money-laundering and other illegal activities - not to hamper US citizens living outside the US who wish to hold accounts in the United States. Banks need to be held more accountable and should not be closing accounts and refusing service to Americans living outside the US - this is not right and I am committed to changing this.

Message from the Candidate:

I can personally relate to the many American's living overseas and appreciate the unique issues, such as taxation, government services, and banking regulation, as they relate to each person, because I have too lived overseas for many years. I understand that your votes count just as much as any other American's. That is why I have taken specific stances on these issues and will keep my promise to work hard on them if elected as your next Congressmen. I would greatly appreciate your support!
