FATCA hearing Brussels Nov 2019FATCA hearing Brussels Nov 2019

On Tuesday 12 November 2019, AARO Board member Paul Atkinson and AARO member Laura Snyder traveled to Brussels to attend a public hearing before the Committee of Petitions of the European Parliament entitled “FATCA and Its Extraterritorial Impact on EU Citizens.” The approximately two-hour hearing was focused on finding solutions, taking account of the concerns of stakeholders, to the issues faced by EU citizens affected by FATCA, notably Accidental Americans, whose issues closely overlap with those of expatriate US citizens.

The hearing included presentations by J. Ryan (the petitioner), Fabien Lehagre (President of the Association of Accidental Americans), officials from France and the Netherlands and representatives of the European Commission, the European Data Protection Board, and the European Banking Federation.

A video recording of the hearing is available at this link. Documentation connected to the hearing, including Ryan’s 2016 petition, is available at this link. Videos of interviews with Ryan, Jude Kirton-Darling (MEP), and Sophie in 't Veld (MEP) are available at this link and this link.
