The federal government has just recently made a series of changes affecting how Americans abroad register and vote.
Federal voting forms have been changed without the public comment process, key information is not available from government websites, and other government websites now contain instructions that could confuse or discourage eligible overseas voters. Some information that overseas voters have relied on to understand their rights is now harder to find or less clear.
These changes affect in particular Americans who live permanently abroad and U.S. citizens born overseas who have never lived in the United States. AARO is concerned that these changes could deter eligible voters from voting.
AARO and its partners have been communicating with federal officials, journalists, and law firms to find the best way to deal with this.
